Common Questions
Contractor statements.
Does Florida require a CPA financial statement for a contractor license?
No. Florida evaluates financial responsibility through a credit report, and where the score falls short, a board approved financial responsibility course; a financially responsible officer posts a bond. Financial statements matter for bonding, bank financing, prequalification, and for licences in states that ask for them.
What does Alabama require?
The Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors accepts an audited, reviewed or compiled financial statement prepared by a CPA under generally accepted accounting principles, no more than one year old. Cash basis and tax basis statements are not accepted and a deficit is not accepted. Applicants need at least $10,000 in net worth and $10,000 in working capital, and the board sets the bid limit from the statement.
Which level of service do I need?
The board, surety or bank decides. Alabama accepts a compilation, a review or an audit. Sureties often ask for a review as the bonding programme grows, and a bank may accept a compilation. We confirm the requirement in writing before the engagement starts.
Can you prepare the statements if you also keep our books?
Yes for a compilation or a review, with the required disclosure that we are not independent. An audit is not available in that case.
How quickly can this be done?
It depends on the state of the records. Books that are current and reconciled with a usable work in progress schedule move quickly. Where cleanup is needed we scope and quote it before starting.
