Common Challenges

What keeps a nonprofit's finances from being clear.

Restricted and unrestricted funds mixed

Grant money, donor restrictions, and operating funds tracked in one pool, so nobody can say what is actually available to spend.

Board reports late or unclear

Financial statements the board cannot read arriving after the meeting they were meant for.

Grants tracked in spreadsheets

Grant budgets, spending, and reporting deadlines managed outside the accounting system and reconciled by hand.

Budgets that never meet actuals

An annual budget approved once and never compared to results month by month.

Form 990 as an afterthought

An information return assembled at the deadline from books that were not built to support it.

Internal controls with a small team

One or two people handling deposits, payments, and reconciliations with no separation of duties and no review.

How We Help

Accounting a board can read and a funder can trust.

We provide CPA-led monthly accounting built around fund accounting: restricted and unrestricted activity tracked separately, grants tracked against their budgets and deadlines inside the accounting system, and financial statements prepared in the form boards and funders expect.

Budgets are compared to actuals every month, cash flow is forecast across funding cycles, and board reporting is designed to be read in the meeting rather than filed after it. Internal controls are designed for a small staff, with practical separation of duties and CPA review.

We prepare Form 990 from books built to support it. Where a funder or lender requires compiled or reviewed financial statements, we perform those engagements under the applicable professional standards; if a requirement calls for an audit, we tell you and help you plan for it. Financial leadership on a fractional basis is available for organizations that need a finance director without hiring one.

Common Questions

Nonprofit questions.

Do you prepare Form 990?

Yes. Form 990 preparation is quoted based on the organization's size and activities, and it goes faster and cleaner when we also maintain the monthly accounting it draws from.

Can you help our board understand the financials?

Yes. We design board reporting for the people in the room: statement of activities and financial position, budget to actual, restricted fund balances, and cash flow, with a CPA available to walk the board through it.

Can you track restricted grants?

Yes. Grant and restricted-fund tracking inside the accounting system, with spending against each grant budget and the reporting deadlines built into the monthly close.
